Rights in Exile Platform
A global resource hub working to promote and strengthen access to justice and legal protection of refugees worldwide. We offer dedicated information for refugees and legal advisors, connect refugees with legal counsel, and foster the creation of a dynamic global network of asylum law practitioners.
Why Rights in Exile?
Legal aid for refugees is sparse and often difficult to access. But it is paramount to the realisation of refugees’ rights, in particular legal status and protection. Access to information, resources and connections – for both legal practitioners and refugees – is limited. The Rights in Exile Platform addresses this crucial gap.
What we offer
Quality information and support to legal aid providers and refugees
The Rights in Exile (RiE) Platform supports displaced people to increase their chances to secure protection and access their rights. We connect individuals, organizations and experts globally on legal issues relating to refugee protection, and provides legal analysis and expertise to strengthen legal information and representation.
The RiE Platform connects legal assistance providers with resources, contacts and training to maximize their capacity to assist displaced people. Our Legal Resources provide:
- a Country Directory of free legal assistance providers in over 160 countries
- a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Country List with country-specific information and support for asylum cases related to the LGBTQI+ community
- a Special Issues section providing legal research into areas of persecution related to asylum claims and protection
- a database of Country of Origin experts
- a collection of national and international case law databases
The RiE Platform strives to ensure that refugees have access to specialist, local, free legal advice and information, and to empower them in the exercise of their rights. Our Refugee Resources gather essential guidance and tools for refugees in the process of applying for asylum and status determination based on their country.
- If you need legal assistance, you can visit our Legal Assistance Country Directory working in over 160 countries.
- If you are a refugee who is applying for asylum through the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), you can access our Self Help Kits to get guidance on the Refugee Status Determination procedure.
- If you are part of the LGBTQI+ community and need information or support, visit our Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Country List.
